Thinking about our own personal development
All too often, we expend a huge amount of energy worrying about and looking after everyone around us – our partner, our children, our family, our colleagues, even our pets – supporting them to grow, make good decisions, be healthy and find the things they have lost (“Mum, where are my green stripy socks?”, “Susan, have you seen my work bag?” are questions that might sound familiar!)
How often do we put ourselves in focus, in the Number One spot, and consider our own personal growth and development? What are we prioritising in order to keep ourselves healthy, to optimise our performance, to gain new knowledge or skills? As one of our coaches shared in our Gratitude post a few weeks ago, ‘every day is a school day’. How many of us are guilty of neglecting our own personal development?
Here on the Virtual Coach, we thought we’d take this opportunity to provide a reminder of some of the reasons why we should invest in personal development:
- Enhanced Self-Awareness: Taking time to reflect on your strengths, development areas, values, and passions provides enhanced self-awareness, helping you to make informed choices. When working through these in coaching sessions, greater satisfaction shows up in both personal and professional lives.
- Improved Skills: Personal development often involves acquiring new skills or refining existing ones, boosting both career prospects and confidence. Whether it’s developing communication, leadership, or technical abilities, continuous growth makes you more adaptable and nimble, opening up opportunities that may otherwise not have been available.
- Increased Resilience: Investing in personal growth equips you with the emotional intelligence and coping mechanisms to handle setbacks more effectively. A more robust mindset helps you to be better prepared to bounce back from adversity.
- Better Relationships: As you grow personally, your relationships benefit as well. Elevated communication skills and heightened empathy make it easier to connect with others and foster stronger, more meaningful relationships.
- Greater Fulfilment: Focusing on your own personal development helps you to pursue passions, unlock potential, and optimise strengths. This sets you up to take on ambitious goals and find greater fulfilment in achieving them.
Personal development comes in many forms. We talk about performance coaching and skills development regularly, as these are our areas of expertise, and we strongly believe in their effectiveness. But why not consider networking as a form of personal development? How about meditation, an evening class, or building your exercise regime. Perhaps simply having that conversation that you’ve been putting-off?
