Searching for the Spark

Has your spark faded?

We often hear about leaders struggling to disconnect from work, that they’re always “on”, with little time for life outside work. But there’s another challenge that’s just as real, and often less talked about: what if we’re struggling to connect

For some leaders, the spark can fade. The “why” that once drove them feels distant. The role that used to energise them now feels heavy. They’re turning up and keeping things going, but motivation is running on fumes.

Why Does the Spark Fade?

It’s not about a failing, or a lack of personal energy – it’s about the natural weight of leadership. We hear it from many leaders in coaching, especially those in SME’s experiencing accelerated growth. Why?

  • The role shifts as you grow – more time collaborating with finance, HR, compliance; less on the creative or client-facing work you love
  • Complexity drowns out clarity – firefighting and reactive actions take over, leaving little space to be proactive or to reflect on purpose. And confusion prompts avoidance
  • The pressure never eases – relentless change, economic uncertainty, and dynamic competition all serve to sap energy and passion
  • Leadership is lonely – it can feel unsafe to admit “I’ve lost my spark” when we’re supposed to inspire others

How To Reignite the Spark

Create some space to pause and ask yourself:

  • What first excited me about this business/role?
  • What still feels meaningful – and what feels like dead weight?
  • If I step back from the noise, what kind of leader do I want to be now?

Coaching can make a powerful difference here. Through coaching conversations, many leaders rediscover their sense of purpose – or sometimes, reshape it into something new that feels more aligned with where they are today.

If you’ve noticed that the fire isn’t burning as brightly as it once did, it doesn’t mean you’ve reached the end of the road. It may simply mean it’s time to take a step back, reflect, and reconnect.

💬 If this resonates with you, perhaps a coaching conversation could help you find that spark again. A Discovery Session with ICC could help you decide how to re-ignite your motivation. You’re In Cool Company.
