Let’s Talk about Culture (Again!)

Our Greatest Asset or Biggest Liability…

Here on the Virtual Coach, we regularly provide insights on culture (the organisational variety) and we’re not going to apologise for doing so. Why not? Because culture is the invisible hand, guiding every decision, interaction, and behaviour within our organisations.

You see, culture can either be our greatest asset or biggest liability.

We know that a strong, positive culture fosters collaboration, innovation, and a sense of purpose. It’s the foundation stone of employee retention, motivating our people when no-one is looking and giving them reason to high-perform, with the best interests of the organisation at heart. We have also seen toxic, or misaligned cultures, struggling with high staff turnover, low morale, unhealthy conflict and, in the worst cases, public scandals.

The Role of Leadership in Shaping a High-Performance Culture

The days are behind us when leaders viewed organisational culture as an afterthought, something to deal with once the commercials are met. We are genuinely delighted that many of our clients now recognise that, as leaders, if they are not actively shaping their organisational culture, their teams will fill the void with their own interpretations of what performance looks like…

This leads to inconsistency, confusion, and a culture that may work in opposition to team goals rather than support them. Culture must be cultivated with the same level of care and strategy that is applied to any other critical component of our business.

We’ve talked before about ‘the shadow we cast’ as leaders and how teams naturally pay attention to the actions and behaviours of those driving the direction the business. For example:

  • If we say we value transparency, are we open and honest with our teams?
  • If we champion innovation, do we encourage risk-taking and learn from failure

As leaders, we set the tone for the entire organisation. Our words, actions, and even the decisions we don’t make, all contribute to the culture we’re fostering.

Fostering a Culture of Trust

The foundational (and most powerful) element of a high-performance culture is trust. When trust is woven into the fabric of an organisation’s operation, employees feel safe to take risks, share ideas, and try new approaches all without fear of retaliation or judgement. Foundational trust leads to higher levels of engagement, productivity, accountability, and ultimately job satisfaction. With trust present, communication is effective, goals are clear, and responsibilities are well-defined.

A culture of trust is the foundation upon which strong, resilient, and successful organisations are built – it is the bedrock of ICC’s Performance Culture Model.

Competition is rife, and we suggest that organisational culture could be your secret weapon. Building a strong, positive culture that is embedded in your teams, your processes, and your services means that you are not just creating a great place to work; you’re laying the foundation for sustainable success and setting your organisation up to thrive well into the future.
