Stretching Ourselves This Summer

Summer – the time for rest and relaxation?

Summer is often referred to as a season of rest and relaxation – we go looking for sun, sea, sun loungers and the odd cocktail. But what if this summer break, instead of resting and recovering where it’s familiar, we step boldly into the unfamiliar? What if we treat the holidays not just as a break, but as an opportunity to grow

Because just beyond our comfort zones lie the stories we talk about for years to come, the confidence we didn’t know we had, and the growth we weren’t expecting.

The Restriction of Comfort Zones

Our comfort zones are like a pair of soft, familiar pyjamas – warm, safe, and easy to stay in. But spend too long wearing them, and we start to get a little fidgety, looking for reasons to get up and change out of them.

Personal development happens where things are a little uncertain, a little uncomfortable, and a little scary. Not dangerously so – but just enough to challenge our assumptions about ourselves. That’s where transformation begins, and the Summer is as good a time as any to start challenging ourselves!

Your Summer Challenge List

We’ve come up with a list of things that are guaranteed to get us off a sun lounger and push us out of our comfort zones this summer and we wanted to share it here. Why not try something that makes your heart race a little?

  • Try a Via Ferrata – Clip in and climb high. It’s not just about the view – it’s about proving to yourself you can do hard things.
  • Go hiking – Get out into the landscape and be self-sufficient for the day, it can lead to the most breathtaking perspectives. Aristotle used walking to stimulate thought and creativity, referring to it as ‘taking our ideas for a walk’.
  • Take your kids surfing – You’ll bond, laugh, fall off, and rise again. And they’ll see that courage doesn’t come from perfection – it comes from falling off and trying again.
  • Try watercolour painting – No need for masterpieces. Just the vulnerability of starting something new is its own kind of art.
  • Get up at an open mic night (even if it’s at home!) – Your voice matters. And your fear of being seen might just be waiting to turn into the thrill of being heard.

Every one of these experiences pushes a boundary. And every time you cross one, your comfort zone expands. We’re sure there are plenty more to add to our list!

Personal Development in Action

It’s easy to underestimate the cumulative power of these moments. But each small risk rewires your sense of possibility. Each challenge builds resilience, confidence, and creativity. Each “I didn’t think I could do that” becomes a louder “What else am I capable of?”

That’s personal development in action. Because the version of you who tries something new is already braver than the one who didn’t. And growth doesn’t just happen by reading about it. It happens through doing

Make Good Use of the Summer

Try the thing that gives you butterflies. Be a little unsure. Be willing to laugh at yourself. Risk looking silly. Invite discomfort – not as an enemy, but as a teacher.

And come September, don’t just return with souvenirs and tan lines – go back to the office with stories of growth, moments of courage, and a reminder that you’re capable of far more than you thought. Let us know what you are going to try!
