Simplifying decision-making
In the ICC office, we have a small wooden plaque on the wall and it simply reads ‘Hell Yeah’. Let us tell you about the significance of this small plaque…
When it comes to making decisions, whether in business, personal life, or leadership, clarity provides power. And sometimes, that clarity starts in the form of a gut reaction. That’s where the “Hell Yeah” filter comes into our decision-making. And it’s not simply about being impulsive:
The concept is simple: if a proposal, opportunity, or idea doesn’t immediately spark a “Hell Yeah”, then it’s time to question whether it’s right for us, or whether we are right for the job. We’ve all been faced with crippling indecision at some point in our lives – weighing up pros and cons, and trying to rationalise a lukewarm choice. But the truth is, the best decisions often don’t need a spreadsheet or any in-depth ‘what if’ discussions. They simply feel right. They energise us. And they align with our values, goals, and instincts.
We find that using the “Hell Yeah” filter helps cut through the analytical noise. It’s a starter tool for clarity. If we’re wavering, hesitating, or trying to talk ourselves into something, we pause and ask: “Is this a Hell Yeah?” If it’s not, we give ourselves permission to brake check, and potentially walk away from the opportunity.
This approach isn’t about being impulsive – it’s about being intentional. It’s about trusting that when something truly resonates, we’ll know it. It’s about value – do we bring value, and do other parties get value from our involvement? Don’t force the decision to meet your objectives or targets, question its value, to you and those that rely on you.
So next time you’re faced with a decision, big or small, ask yourself:
“Is it a Hell Yeah?”
If it is, then go all in. If it’s not – respectfully let it go.
