Saying Thank You – It Only Takes a Second

The Power of Saying Thank You

As a Member of 1% For The Planet, ICC donates 1% of our annual revenue to environmental projects and this year, we chose to donate to The Canal & River Trust. The charity looks after over 2,000 miles of waterways in the UK, allowing wildlife to thrive and us all to access and connect with nature. Did you know that over 9 million people in the UK have waterways within a 10-minute walk of them?

We are so impressed by the work that The Canal & River Trust is doing, and it seems they have got their ‘thank you’s’ right too. A couple of weeks after we made our donation, they called us to say thank you and to give us an opportunity to ask any questions. And a couple of weeks after that, we received a handwritten thank you card. Gestures that probably took them a maximum of 5 minutes have stuck with us for much longer, and this reminded us that saying thank you is profoundly powerful.

Saying thank you takes barely any time. But the ripple it creates can stretch far beyond the moment.

The Smallest Investment with the Greatest Return

When we say thank you – to the barista who remembered how we like our coffee, the colleague who stayed late to help meet our deadline, the friend who checked in after we had a rough week – we offer more than politeness. We offer acknowledgment and gratitude. In that instant, we remind another human being: You matter. I see you.

Sometimes that’s all it takes to lift someone, or to reinforce that what they do isn’t going unnoticed.

A Thank You is a Bridge

Saying thank you bridges gaps. Between manager and employee; between two strangers; between parent and child. It softens hard conversations and strengthens good ones. It nurtures relationships and inspires reciprocity.

Think about the last time someone genuinely thanked you. Not out of habit, but with intention. Maybe it surprised you. Maybe it made you smile for longer than you expected. Maybe it changed the tone of your entire day. Think about the last time you genuinely thanked somebody – could you do this more often or in a more heartfelt way?

Time Well Spent

In a second, “thank you” can restore hope, strengthen connections, and create a moment of shared humanity. It’s one of the simplest ways to make a difference – no platform needed, no hashtag required.

So take that second. Use those words.

Because thank you might be the smallest action you take today…
But it could be the biggest moment in someone else’s.

Let us know how you get on!
