What’s the difference?
Today’s Virtual Coach answers a question that we are asked on a fairly regular basis – why does coaching sometimes feel like mentoring? The terms are often used interchangeably but coaching and mentoring display fundamental differences. Both can be incredibly valuable, depending on your needs!
What Is Coaching?
Coaching is a structured, goal-oriented process, supporting individuals to unlock their potential and achieve specific outcomes. A coach doesn’t provide advice – they ask powerful questions, challenge assumptions, and guide you to your own insights. They support you to navigate the roadblocks or challenges you are facing and pose questions that help you create solutions.
Some key traits of coaching include:
- Focus on performance, growth, and change
- Time-bound and often tied to specific goals
- Led by a trained professional (check certification)
- The use of frameworks and development tools
Example: You want to develop your leadership skills or transition into a new career. A coach will help you clarify your goals, identify obstacles, and create an actionable plan. They will also uncover strengths and development areas and will work with you to make progress on both.
What Is Mentoring?
Mentoring is a development relationship, generally where a more experienced or specifically skilled person shares their knowledge, advice, and guidance with someone looking to develop and progress in a similar area. Mentoring is informal and long-term, based on mutual trust and respect, and is generally led by the ‘mentee’. A mentor often works in the same industry, looking to support the succession of talent.
Some key traits of mentoring include:
- Focus on sharing experience and wisdom
- Ongoing and less structured
- Based on personal connection and rapport
- May include career advice, introductions, and storytelling
Example: You’re new to an industry, or moving into a specialist area, and want to learn from someone who’s been there. A mentor shares their journey, offers advice, and helps you navigate challenges.
We hope that this has given you some clarity about whether to investigate coaching or mentoring. We would be delighted to support you on your development path. You’re In Cool Company.
