Why does collective action matter on IWD 2025?
We talk about effective collaboration quite regularly here at ICC, and today we want to look at the topic from a slightly different angle – that of collective action.
Collective action never fails to be powerful. We’ve all witnessed when a group of people come together to push an agenda, or to complete a project, or to support a specific cause. The power of the collective creates a change from which, on occasion, movements are borne.
Collective action is one of the activities associated with International Women’s Day this year, and for very good reason. Achieving gender parity in organisations requires more than just policies – it demands a cultural shift driven directly by collective action and shared ownership. When businesses, leaders, and employees unite to challenge biases, promote inclusivity, and create equitable opportunities, meaningful progress becomes possible.
Corporate DEI policies seem to be in and out of favour so far in 2025, with some large organisations dropping their investment in favour of other strategic agendas. We believe that there is still more to be done to release the clear commercial benefits of a balanced workforce.
Why does collective action matter right now?
Gender inequality in organisations is a systemic issue that cannot be solved by individuals alone. Collective action brings together diverse voices, resources, and perspectives to push for change at all levels. Some great examples that we’ve seen include:
- Leaders setting the tone by prioritising gender diversity in hiring, promotions, and leadership roles.
- Employees advocating for inclusivity through allyship, mentorship, and participation in diversity programmes.
- Organisations implementing policies that go beyond compliance to create real impact, such as pay transparency, flexible work arrangements, and anti-bias training.
These activities bring together people of all genders, which in turn accelerates progress towards achieving true gender parity. Studies consistently show that diverse teams drive better business outcomes, making gender equity not just a moral imperative but a strategic advantage.
